1 General Information

  • D’s Locks are compatible with a variety of wheelchairs and wheels. The D’s Locks components that are specific to your wheelchair and wheels are the piston adaptors/locking nuts and the locking rings/moon shaped pieces. All other D’s Locks components are common to all D’s Locks installations.
  • Install Lock-rings on wheels prior to installing piston assembly, adaptor and lever.
  • Only work on one side of the wheelchair at a time.
  • We recommend using a thread locker on all threads to prevent loosening of screws from shock and vibration. Use a medium strength (blue) for use with hand tools, e.g. Loctite® 242 or 243 (blue) or Vibra-TITE® VC-3.
  • If you are replacing your D’s Locks, for best results degrease the screws and the internal holes on both the moon shaped pieces and the Lock-Rings, with a cleaning solvent spray, e.g. Loctite® 7063 Cleaner Degreaser, and allow to dry.
  • Depending on the configuration of hardware on your wheelchair, other wheelchair hardware may block access to the pistons, piston adaptors and screws. The piston adaptors can be placed in various positions on the camber tube, e.g. in front of the camber tube if other hardware is installed behind the camber tube.
  • All parts are interchangeable for both sides of the wheelchair, e.g. can be used on the left or right side.
  • For multiple wheel sets to work interchangeably with D’s Locks, each wheel should have its own lock ring with moon shaped pieces.
  • D’s Locks have 24 locking stops. On some wheelchairs, the axles are not centered in the axle tube, especially if there is a lot of camber. This is not a cause for concern, but may cause some piston positions to not engage with the lock rings, e.g. with 4 degree or greater camber, positions between about 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock may not engage.
  • To avoid friction and corrosion, D’s Locks uses Teflon-coated cables. It is not necessary to lubricate the cables upon installation, but they should be periodically maintained.
  • D’s Locks will not work with power-assist wheels, e.g. E-motion wheels.
  • Depending on the type of wheels being used, for example poly-fibre PBO spoked wheels, you may feel a slight “rock”. This is not a cause for concern and is caused by the rotation of the wheel and the flexible spoke design. The “rock” can be decreased by increasing the spoke tension on PBO -spoked wheels. Wire-and aluminum spoked wheels tend to rock less.
  • Due to the custom nature of how each wheelchair is manufactured and configured, D’s Locks adaptive hardware may need to be modified. This happens in less than 1% of all sales.

2 General Warnings

DO NOT ENGAGE LOCKS WHILE wheelchair IS IN MOTION!!! This product is NOT intended to be used as a braking system. D’s Locks are to be used as a “Parking Brake”.
If locks are engaged while wheelchair is in motion, SERIOUS injury to wheelchair occupant and/or attendant may occur. It has also been known to damage or break the wheelchair and/or the wheels.
Always inspect all hardware to make sure it is securely fastened, before using the locks.
Only use the hardware supplied with the D’s Locks; do not substitute any other screws, brackets, or clamps.

  • 2 Piston locking nuts with 2 washers
  • 2 Piston adaptors with 2 allen head (hex) screws and 2 washers
  • 1 Lever Clamp with 1 allen head (hex) screw and 1 washer

Tools Needed

  • 7/16″ open end wrench
  • Large flat bladed screwdriver
  • 1 1/8” open end wrench

Installation Instructions

wheelchairs-camber-tube-1

Step 1

  1. Remove the wheel from wheelchair.
  2. Remove the old brakes.
  3. Place the piston adaptor on the camber tube.
The piston adaptors can be placed in various positions on the camber tube, e.g. in front or in back of the camber tube.
wheelchairs-camber-tube-2

Step 2

  1. Expand the piston adaptor over the camber tube by using a large flat bladed screwdriver. Insert the tip between the mounting surfaces and twist slightly.
  2. Insert the allen head (hex) screw with washer.
  3. Loosely tighten the screw using a 3/16” allen (hex) wrench.
wheelchairs-camber-tube-3

Step 3

  1. Place the piston locking nut and washer on the inside or the outside of the piston adaptor. The washer should be placed between the piston adaptor and locking nut.
  2. Thread the piston assembly through the piston adaptor and hand tighten until the piston threads are visible from the piston adaptor.
  3. Replace the wheel.
wheelchairs-camber-tube-4

Step 4

  • Measure the clearance between the piston threads and lock-ring and adjust it to 1/4 inch. If there is not enough clearance between the piston threads and lock-ring, remove the piston adaptor and place it at a different location on the camber tube.
  • Extend the lever to ensure that the piston engages with the ring lock. If there is too much space between the piston threads and lock-ring, adjust the piston and piston locking nut until the piston engages.
wheelchairs-camber-tube-5

Step 5

  • Remove the wheel.
  • Securely tighten the piston, piston locking nut and the piston adaptor screw.
  • Replace the wheel.
  • Repeat on the other wheel.
wheelchairs-camber-tube-6

Step 6

  • Run the cables to the front of the wheelchair going over the cross-tube under seat upholstery.
  • Place the lever clamp on the frame at the desired location. The lever clamp is interchangeable for both sides of the wheelchair.
  • Insert the allen head (hex) screw with washer, with the screw facing outward, and loosely tighten the screw using a 3/16” allen (hex) wrench.
wheelchairs-camber-tube-7

Step 7

  • Insert the lever into the lever clamp.
  • With the lever released (unlocked) and extended (locked), adjust the lever and clamp to the desired position.
  • Securely tighten the screw.
wheelchairs-camber-tube-8

Step 8

  • Test the lever tension in the released (unlocked) and extended (locked) positions. If necessary, adjust the tension on the bolt using a 7/16″ open end wrench.
  • Inspect the Lock Rings to ensure they are aligned and that all screws are securely fastened.
  • Inspect the piston assembly and the locking nut to ensure they are securely fastened.

use_a
  • The operation of the locks is very simply. The locks are engaged and disengaged via the lever that is connected to the block with the “D’s Locks” logo etched in it. (Photo “A”)
use_b
  • The locks are engaged (locked) when the tip of the lever is perpendicular to the frame member it is mounted to (Photo “B”).
use_c
use_d
  • The locks are disengaged (un-locked), when the main portion (Photo “C”) of the lever is parallel with the frame member it is mounted to. (Photo “D”)
 use_e
  • Moving the lever pushes and pulls a “piston” via a cable (Photo “E”).
use_f
  • When the locks are engaged, the “Piston” extends into one of the holes in the “lock-ring”. (Photo “F”).
use_g
  • While the locks are disengaged, the “piston” retracts into the “sleeve” (Photo “G”).
